IDP a ticket to drive

An international driving permit (IDP) allows you to drive with your SA driver’s licence in 150 other different countries.

You can get your IDP from the AA if you present them with all of the following:
1. A completed application form
2. R249 for the permit fee*
3. Two glossy ID or passport photos
4. Your valid SA driver’s licence or certified copies of both sides of the card
5. Your SA ID or passport or again certified copies

Ensure your SA licence doesn’t expire for another year when you apply for your IDP. If it does, the time that your IDP will be valid for will be altered accordingly. Always carry your SA driver’s licence with your IDP. It is vital to get your IDP before you leave SA. The AA in London, for example, can’t issue you with an IDP on your SA licence because they have no way of checking if it’s valid. The country that issued your driver’s must also issue your IDP.
